The group I mentor with is SO cool. They give the kids after school homework help, summer school to help them stay caught up, and they help the kids get into the best schools possible in the area (it's a really bad school district. . .). It does a lot for these kids—most of whom seem to have supportive families, which always helps. Plus, they get mentors.
Today, they had an outing and mentors were invited, so my mentee and I got to ice skate for a few hours. It was really fun! She got her balance quickly and really opened up to me! She's kind of a shy girl, but once you get to know her, she has a lot of fun stories to share!
When she was ready for a break, we had just enough time to take off our skates, grab some hot chocolate and watch the other skaters for a few minutes before it was time to go. Then, we tried a park in the area (not a terribly exciting one, unfortunately), then went to Mickey D's*. Then, we went to the library and read a few books to each other (some really cute ones, too, like How Santa Really Works: who knew?). We stayed until the library closed and then I brought her home and got to see her house, her family and meet her cousin! It was a really fun day! Now, I'm off to a Star Wars marathon. . . hehehe. Gettin' my geek on!
*No vegetarian options, which usually means I choose fish but I forgot today and had chicken. . . whatever.
